We now know the status of students' travel to and from Barstow School in Chittenden and Fair Haven Grade School, the two Safe Routes to Schools Program recipients. Work is complete on the initial phase of the program, which included traffic counts and speed of vehicular traffic as well as surveys in the classrooms and parents' attitudes and behavior toward walking and bicycling to school.
Today children get driven for various reasons. Information has been obtained on the form of transportation children use, how far they live from school, what factors affect the travel decision and theoretically, how changes in the factors would affect the travel mode. The traffic report is now being presented to local officials, specifically the Road Foreman/Commissioner and Selectboards.
In order to create an environment where children can walk and bike safely to school, addressing the identified physical and cultural barriers is among the first order of business. Local officials, given this information, will be solicited for input in developing travel plans for the schools. School travel plans include an assessment of current conditions and a plan to overcome these barriers.
Safe Routes to Schools is a community program that will benefit all - not just children. It's health, safety and welfare.

Route 30 Byways
The designation of the Stone Valley Scenic Byway has been in the works for 3 years. With an ultimate goal of will promoting community development, by balancing economic development and tourism with stewardship of some of Vermont's outstanding intrinsic resources. Vermont's Byway Program has been expanding to include corridors throughout the state.
The application for Route 30 from Poultney south through Wells, Pawlet, Rupert, Dorset and Manchester will be submitted to the Scenery Preservation Council (SPC). It includes letters of support from local Selectboards and Planning Commissions, the VTrans' District Transportation Administrator, local businesses and organizations. The Corridor Management Plan along with the application is reviewed by the SPC who will then hold a public hearing in the Region to assess community support. Ultimately the Transportation Board makes the designation, enabling the potential funding of projects.
